The wild nature of Devils Lake makes for waters ripe with adventure. A glacial basin with no natural outlet, it was once rampant with flooding. Its wild shores consumed as much as 70,000 acres of the surrounding forest and farmland, almost doubling in size. The US Army Corps of Engineers eventually led the construction of an outlet, halting the floods, and leaving today the legacy of a sprawling, chaotic lake. Powerline poles jut out of the water and tree trunks stand defiantly in patches of sunken forest. There’s a strong curiosity about Devils Lake. A lingering reminder of the humbling power of nature.
But in that chaos, we sportsmen find the largest and feistiest fish in the region.
